Join us at the second Social Startup Lab: July 23rd

Social Startup Labs

The second Social Startup Lab has an extra practical focus. It is aimed at people who have a product that they want to make (and sell).

Remade In Brixton Logo

Learning from the last Social Startup Lab will be combined with the local know-how of Remade In Brixton to co-produce a special Brixton Skill-share Social Startup Lab

Whether you are an established startup (A Big Bird), or one that has just got going (A Fledgling) or are incubating an idea (An Egg), you are welcome to come along and get your practical idea off the ground, in community.

What is a Social Startup Lab?

Social Startup Lab is a practical day for people who want to make a lasting social impact in their communities. For those who think they can do something to make it real, and want to do it in a way that connects up with what others are doing and what is already happening.

During the day we will give you a toolkit for turning your ideas for improving your community into action and, potentially, a new startup that makes social change and has market impact

We will offer an opportunity to share ideas for action to create the communities we want to live in and a chance to learn more about your own ability to make social change for you and others.

There won't be work left for us unless we create it.

What are the benefits in coming along?

  • Learn by doing! Learn how urgent unmet social needs can create opportunities for new and/or existing social ventures that meet these needs, using the resources we already have.
  • Get a sense of the bigger picture of how the opportunities connect up with each other
  • Learn how to exploit those opportunities by applying techniques from "Lean Startups" to create low risk, low cost "Social Startups" with robust business models for delivering inclusive products and services. We will use the simple but powerful Business Model Canvas outline.
  • Learn how to test the market for your prospective Social Startup by performing a Social Action together with a group within a week of attendance.
  • Discover your Inner Entrepreneur
  • Meet people from different backgrounds who are up for making a difference. Get support in forming a team or join one on the day.
  • Take away practical tools for turning collaboration up to the max both in your workplace and in your communities.

Do we really do all of the above in one day?

Yes.  Come and see it to believe it. This is not about talking. It is about acting together, as individuals, but in a connected way so that we make the most of what we have as a whole. It will be  fun and focused. We see this as the future design approach to our communities. Rock up and make your mark!

What do you mean by Lab?

Simple Description: a bunch of people with different skill sets come together to fix something!

This is easy to understand for a physical thing like mending a wall. But for social things it can get a lot more tricky as some of what is broken is difficult to see. Social problems are connected with financial ones and also with our physical locations. In our communities a lot goes to waste because we cannot see how to things are connected up.

In the Labs we get to see how things connect up, so that our solutions can be much stronger. We get to come up with solutions and get them in motion there and then.

Labs are not a completely new idea. London Creative Labs is pioneering in taking these labs deep into the heart of local communities and maximising participation from the local community in designing their own solutions to common problems.

Why bother solving problems at all? Well mainly because we think massive opportunities come out of doing this. Opportunities at all levels: from work, to play, to connection, to community. What we need now is to see the opportunity that things like funding cuts, and recession bring. We can make better use of what we have, for a start. The Labs are where we do this and work out how together how we can all benefit in the process.

This is a London Creative Labs production, in association with Remade in Brixton!
